I suppose it is kind of funny that it’s taken me this long to finally understand the basis of nutrition. After all, I’ve been on and off of Weight Watchers for years. You’d think I would finally figure out, especially after all the Schoolhouse Rock and elementary school teachings that food is fuel, right?

Well, it’s taken some spiritual work and a chronic illness, but I think I’m finally figuring it out. Putting good food into your body is more than a weight loss or a health or a nutrition issue–it is a spiritual issue.

I can hear you questioning how it can be a spiritual issue. Our food is physical. It goes into our bodies. It’s what we eat. How can it be spiritual? The food we eat can be spiritual in two ways. First, our bodies are a gift. Whether you believe our bodies are a gift of science or a gift from the universe or a gift from God, the truth is that they are pretty amazing things. We need to treat them the way we’d treat something precious we received from a good friend or loved one. That means feeding it right and taking care of it.

Secondly, there’s one thing my fibromyalgia has taught me and that is to get off the processed food. I’m not perfect. I still have a McDonald’s habit that I am having a hard time beating, and chips are a girl’s best friend. *grins* But I do know I feel better when I eat well, and I live better when I eat well. And I feel better about myself – no snacker’s guilt.

I’m learning, slowly, to feed my body the good stuff. It’s retraining from a lifetime of convenience and processed foods. It’s a good retraining and it’s one that will serve me well moving forward.
